Atlantic Coatings, Inc has announced a joint venture with Xiom Systems, Inc to provide Mobile Polymer Powder Coating services to the marine industry throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Having established a large architectural and decorative powder coating operation serving the mid-Atlantic in 2006, the company is now positioning itself to focus most of their offerings on the marine industry – with its joint venture partnership with Xiom Systems.

Xiom has developed both a mobile application system and special polymer formulations specific to recreational and commercial marine applications.

“What we are most excited about” noted Atlantic 's Chuck Bell “is the polymer formulation for Anti-Fouling”. “The anti fouling formulation has tested to be incredibly effective at keeping growth off the bottom, while also being very sensitive to the environment” said Bell . Instead of a liquid paint, the polymer formulation is a powder which is applied “thermally” to the bottom of a vessel. The system can be used to apply the anti fouling coating to metal, fiberglass and wood hulls including metal and composite running gear such as prop's, rudders etc.

Bell explained some of the other attributes of the system and polymer; “While the polymer does contain copper as a primary means to eliminate fouling, there are no solvents or VOC's in the product”. Additionally the polymer holds the copper in a microscopic “lattice-work” – thus reducing the amount of harmful leeching to a minimum. “The micro tube or capillary concept means the coating is non-ablating; the active ingredient remains in place to do its job – instead of sloughing off”. “When you take away the solvents and VOC's and then radically reduce the leeching – you start to have a revolutionary product – in terms of the environment” said Bell .

However what is really remarkable according to Bell and Xiom – is that testing has shown this product to exceed the performance of the best conventional liquid coatings. The Polymer Anti Fouling coating has been tested by The Florida Institute of Technology, and was developed in part by the US Navy. “The test panels from FIT are an amazing testament to the efficacy of this product” noted Bell . “After almost 6 months of immersion the coated panels not only are bare of fouling but testing also shows a leech rate of less than one percent”. “That means you have a clean bottom and a minimum of potentially harmful byproducts leeching into the water”. What it also means – according to Bell – “In the Chesapeake – this could mean a four to five year period between bottom jobs”!

The new division – Xiom-Atlantic Coatings will soon be offering the anti fouling service via their new Mobile application unit. Bell encourages interested Marina's and Individuals to contact him for more information or to see samples and test data. If you don't reach him – leave a message as he will probably putting the coating on his own boat. “The guys who developed this are top notch engineers who were looking for the best anti fouling properties, however I have a suspicion there may be other benefits –like being quicker through the water, reducing osmotic blistering, etc. I can't wait to compare speed and fuel usage from last year”.
